World Institute for Advanced Study INDIA: Ideas, Individuals, Institutions The World Institute for Advanced Study, CPFS New Delhi invites applications for admission to an extramural course entitled INDIA: Ideas, Individuals, Institutions. The course will provide a unique opportunity for participants to gain an understanding of the underlying dynamics of India as a civilization that has confronted the challenges of modern times with an open-ness to enquiry, recognition of diversity and an overarching quest for a unity posited to exist behind the panoply of appearances. On offer will be a wide-ranging exposition of various facets of modern India along the triple axes of ideas, individuals and institutions in a manner that is not available currently. Neither self-congratulatory nor self-deprecatory, the scholarship underlying the course is rooted in an awareness of contemporary realities. With India in the throes of rapid economic, social and political transformation, the course will attempt to make sense of the complex and multivalent constituents on the ground and their inter-relations with a corpus of ideas, its principal protagonists and institutional embodiments. It will take the audience through an exhilarating exploration of the diverse traditions, cultures and mindscapes which give India its characteristic features. Covering a range of topics such as 1) agriculture, 2) arts (performing & visual), 3) biodiversity, 4) cinema, 5) culture, 6) ecology, 7) economy, 8) education, 9) energy, 10) food, 11) gender, 12) geology, 13) governance, 14) health, 15) history, 16) housing, 17) industry, 18) innovation, 19) law, 20) literature, 21) mathematics, 22) media, 23) medicine, 24) music, 25) philosophy, 26) politics, 27) poverty, 28) population, 29) rivers, 30) science and technology, 31) society, 32) spiritual traditions, 33) trade, 34) transport, 35) urbanization and 36) water, the lectures will be illustrated wherever possible. Each presentation will be 30 minutes long followed by 10 minutes for questions. There will also be time for informal interactions with speakers over lunch and tea which will be provided on all four days of the course. Among those who would benefit from attending such a course are members of the diplomatic corps, non-resident Indian visitors, early to mid-career professionals and persons interested in the rich fare served up by some of India’s most distinguished scholars, scientists and artists. Course fees amounting to INR 20,000/- inclusive of service tax should be paid via a banker’s draft payable in New Delhi or by electronic transfer into the designated account of the Centre for Philosophy and Foundations of Science. The course is also intended to raise funds for the non-profit institution that the Centre is engaged in up-scaling. The dates are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Tuesday October 7 to Friday October 10, 2014 at Hotel Ashok, New Delhi.
