Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season. Champs Bowl Over Guest Keen “A” In Landslide Victory To Increase Lead. League game seven saw the excellent standard that has already been set maintained as high scores continued to be hit aplenty and tremendous matches taking place in all five divisions. With the excellent standard shown so far the League Committee might, just might after careful consideration, look into the possibilities of an end of season Charity Match against a fellow League. This is only a thought at this moment in time but the end of season Charity Matches used to be great entertainment and raise valuable funds for Charity. Watch this space. Division One. Merthyr Labour Club 8 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 1. The Defending Champions from the Merthyr Labour Club continued to set the pace with their latest match resulting in an emphatic 8-1 victory over the visiting Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” as the home side seek to retain their title and the first division new comers still come to terms with life with the big boys. The home side started extremely well with Ron Morgan 100 7 Chris Galleozzie 140, 100 out taking the first pairs against the darts with a fine win over Lee Nicholas & Mark Seggerson 123 and they quickly added the second with Wayne Davies 2x100 & David Rowlands 100,140 proving too strong for Teg Powell & Mike Martin. The third and final pairs saw another break of throw with Gareth Dunn 100 & Chris Galleozzie 140 storming past A. Benbow & C. Powell to give the home side a comfortable lead going into the singles matches. The singles started with Gareth Dunn 4x100 maintaining his good form with a hold of throw over Mike Martin 2x100, 140 to increase the lead even further and in a match that contained some 45 ton-plus scores including 1x180 Ron Morgan 2x100,2x140 and Lee Nicholas 2x100,140 added their share as the former broke throw to steer the Champions into a 5-0 lead. Mark Seggerson 2x100, 140 was next up for the visitors but he found Anthony Carstairs 3x100,121 in fine form as the home side went further ahead and the fourth singles brought more joy for the Labour Club as Chris Galleozzie 100,2x140, 180 breezed past A. Benbow to make it 7-0. The normally reliable Wayne Davies 3x100 was next up for the home side but he took his eye off the ball allowing Teg Powell 120,121 to spring a surprise and gain the Guest a much needed point before Jason Baynham 2x100, 121,140 completed the victory in beating Wayne Benbow 100. Merthyr Football Club “Sea Side” “C” 7 v Troedyrhiw Ex Club 2. Troedyrhiw’s nightmare return to the top division continued as they were on the wrong end of a 7-2 result on their trip to the “Sea Side” at Merthyr Football Club. A break of throw in the first pairs leg saw Dale Pinch 100 & Justin Davies 140 put the home side ahead as they beat Glen Kitchen 100 & Tony Hedges and game two saw the home side go further ahead with Craig Morgan 2x100 & Paul Thomas 100,125 holding throw to beat Graham Price 100 & Gary Champion. Veteran Ron Davies & G. Butler 100,140 brought some cheer for the visitors as they held throw in the last pairs to beat Kevin Hyde 100 & Owain Davies 121 to reduce the arrears heading into the singles matches. Dynamite Dale Pinch 2x100, 140 kept up his winning streak with a win over Glen Kitchen 124 to hold throw and nudge the home side 3-1 ahead and 4-1 soon followed with ever reliable Justin Davies 6x100 beating Tony Hedges 100,125 in another break of throw. Two vastly experienced players met in the next game which saw Craig Morgan 2x100,121,2x140 beat Graham Price 121, 123,140 to hold throw and put the home side even further ahead with time running out for the Ex. The silent assassin Jamie Evans 3x100, 140, 114 out was in excellent form with a break of throw over Gary Champion 100 to make it 6-1 in the hosts favour and 7-1 then followed with rising star Paul Thomas 5x100, 140 beating veteran Paul Thomas 100. The final game of the night saw the visitors gain a much needed second point with G. Butler 2x100,125 getting the better of Kevin Hyde 2x100 in a closely fought game. Horse & Groom 4 v Mount Pleasant Inn 5. This was a highly entertaining encounter from start to finish containing some 45 ton-plus scores as the match went to the final leg before the game was finally decided. Karl Manns 100, 140 & John Terrett 123 held throw in the first pairs to beat Gary Hughes & Steve Colvin 100 and put the Mount into an early lead but the scores were soon level with R. Watkins 100 & Steve Thomas keeping their darts to nudge past Dai Morley 140 & Colin Yendle 100. The third pairs saw the first break of throw with Phil Williams & Brian Nicholas 100 beating Derek Dobbins 100 & Dai Phelps to give the home side a slender lead going into the singles. Summer League Singles Champion Phil Williams 100,123,125,140 kept up his good form with a fine win over Karl Manns 100 to put the hosts 3-1 ahead and this then increased with Brian Nicholas 4x100 breaking the throw of Dai Morley 100,140 to leave the Horse standing one more point away from victory. John Terrett 125,140 beat R. Watkins 100 to pull a point back for the Mt and then Dai Phelps 2x100,125,140 put in a good shift to beat Steve Thomas 2x100,140 and reduce the arrears to a single point. Colin Yendle 4x100,140 was in excellent form as he beat Gary Hughes 100, 118,134,140 against the darts in a thriller which saw the scores draw level with just one more game to play. The last leg saw Steve Colvin 2x100 in action for the home side but he was just edged out by Derek Dobbins 100,140 as the later held throw to earn the Mt a very narrow and hard fought win. Baili-Glas Inn “B” 5 v Lord Raglan “B” 4. The home side will count this as points lost as they struggled against the visiting Lord “B” as the match went right to the wire with missed doubles costing the hosts very dear. Old maestros Viv Morgan 140 & Brian Roberts took full advantage of missed shots from Matthew Quinlan 2x100,135 & Byron Jones to put the visitors ahead but the scores were soon tied as Andrew Rough 2x140 & Mervyn Matthews 100 held throw to beat Paul Thomas & Brian Meek 100. The dynamic duo of Jeff Pearce & Steve Haman 140 then broke the throw of Dean Barnett 100 & Keirion Meek to give the Baili a 2-1 lead going into the match deciding singles games. Andrew Rough 2x100,140,120 out put the hosts into a 3-1 lead with a fine win over Paul Thomas but the Lord were quick to hit back with Dean Barnett 4x100,140, 115 out beating Matthew Quinlan 5x100 in an absolute thriller and then the scores were level with Viv Morgan 2x100,2x125 breaking throw against Byron Jones 100,121,140 by a 2-1 margin. Winter League Singles Champion Jeff Pearce 100,140 held his nerve and throw to beat Keirion Meek and nudge the Baili ahead again at 4-3 but the lead was short lived with Brian Meek 6x100,121,131in excellent form to beat Mervyn Matthews 3x100,140 against the darts and set up a last game shout out. The final game was a case of the old against the new with the “old” Brian Roberts having first throw and amassing 2x100,125 but in the end being beaten by the “new”, well “newish”, Steve Haman 2x100,140 as the hosts took a vital 5-4 win. Grawen Arms 5 v Heolgerrig Club 4. This was another cracking game, containing some 50 ton-plus scores shared equally, as both teams battled fiercely for all the points on offer. Master and apprentice Peter Locke & Scott Bayliss held throw in the first pairs to beat Michael Evans & Bob Watkins in the opening pairs but the lead was short lived with Meirion Evans 100 & Colin Morgan 2x140 despatching Dean Smith & Steve Smith to tie the match at one apiece. The final pairs saw another hold of throw as Darren Locke 100, 140 & uncle Phil 100,131 beat Ray Williams 135 & Iory Haines to secure the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the singles. Ray Williams 5x100, 125 was in fine form for Heolgerrig in the first singles but it was Dean Smith 100 who took the game 2-1 to put the hosts into a 3-1 lead and this was increased to 4-1 with Peter Locke 4x100,135 beating Alan Moore 2x100 by a 2-0 margin. Darren Locke 3x100 then beat Iory Haines 2x100,140 to put the Grawen into a 5-1 lead as they looked all set for a comfortable high scoring win but their visitors had other ideas. Michael Evans 2x100,117 scored a fine, if shock, win over Phil Locke 3x100 to put a second point on the board for Heolgerrig and then in a thrilling eighth game veteran Trad Davies 100,121 edged past Wayne Gutty 3x100,140 by a 2-1 margin to pull another point back . The final game of the night saw another of the “old brigade” Meirion Evans 5x100 of Heolgerrig beat young Scott Bayliss 3x100,122,125 to gain the visitors a vital fourth point. Division Two. Martyrs Club 7 v Merthyr Rugby Club “B” 4. The game started with both sides holding their respective throws in the triples with Mervyn Hughes 140 finding the target for the visitors in the first leg with Ray Phillips 100,120 & Alun Pearce 100 replying for the home side. In the second triples Keith Evans 100 found his range for the Martyrs with Chris Stansfield 122 hitting the mark for the visitors. Mervyn Hughes & Chris Stansfield 2x100 took the first pairs for the Rugby Club but their hosts were quick to hit back with the pairings of B. Howe120/Alun Pearce & Matthew 100/C. Howe giving them a 3-2 lead going into the singles legs. Chris Stansfield levelled the match with a break of throw over Peter Worrell 140 and then a fine game from Mervyn Hughes 116 saw him beat Roy Phillips to put the Rugby Club 4-3 ahead. C. Howe 2x100 gained parity with a win over Jonathon Davies 100 and then the home side regained the lead with Matthew Phillips getting the better of Ron Phillips 140. Further wins for the home side from John Sales 2x100,99 out and Keith Evans over Chris Price and Ian Evans respectively saw them take the match 7-4 and maintain their challenge at the top end of the table. Aberfan Social Club “A” 6 v Morlais Tavern “A”5. This was a very exciting game that started with the home side taking both triples with Lloyd Davies 100,140 & Ken Davies 125 on target in the first leg for the hosts and Warren Rees100,124 & Mike Lewis 100 doing the business in the second. I. Evans & G. Giles got the Morlais onto the scoreboard in the first pairs reducing the arrears to one point but this was quickly restored to two with Warren Rees 125,140 & Phil Green scoring a fine win over Martin Bayliss & J. Gillespie. The last of the pairs legs saw the deficit cut again with I. Thomas 100 & G. Scott 140 getting the better of Lloyd Davies 2x100 & Mike Lewis as the hosts held a 3-2 lead going into the singles. Lloyd Davies 140,180 took the first singles with throw beating I. Thomas putting the hosts 4-2 up before Martin Bayliss 100 gained the Tavern a third point. Good wins from Kevin Downing 100,121and Charles Davies 100 secured a 6-3 lead for the home side but much to their credit the away side continued to battle and took the last two legs through I. Evans and Nigel Bees. Penydarren Social Club “B” 6 v Baili-Glas Inn “A” 5. Last Thursday was Halloween Night and this game was a real horror show, especially from the Baili as the Baili Bug of missed doubles struck again costing them very dear but in fairness to the Pen they found the doubles a bit hard to come by. The Baili “A” took the first triples with throw with Nigel Meek 121 finding the range and game two saw the sides draw level with Ray Smith 100 & Ceri Stent 100 out (2 darts) pulling the sides level. The pairs legs were a total nightmare for the away side who would not even have got a double at the bar as their finishing power totally deserted them. Alan Mee & Cled Jones 125 were in a different universe to Clive Morgan & Graham Elias but as the Baili boys floundered on the double Clive found a 180 from nowhere and then a double to steal the leg and totally transform the game. Terry Morgan 100 & Drew Bradley had the second pairs under control but again the Pen came back through Dai Richards & Ceri Stent 80 out to take the game and a 3-1 lead. Things then went from bad to unbelievable for the visitors as Ashley Mayne & Nigel Meek threw away the last triples against Lyndon Price 122 & Neil Smith giving the hosts a 4-1 lead ahead of the singles. Ashley Mayne 3x100 gave the Baili something to shout about and cling to with a break of throw over Lyndon Price 100 in the first singles and then Terry Morgan kept plugging away to beat Ray Smith 100 and reduce the arrears by another point. The legendary Alan Mee 100 was then involved in a thriller with Neil Smith 100 with the Baili marksman calling on his countless years of experience and fitness to draw the side level at 4-4. Nigel Meek then turned the match around with victory over Barrie Gilby 100 to put the visitors ahead at 5-4 but the lead was short lived as Dai Richards beat Drew Bradley to level at 5-5 setting up a last leg shoot out. Baili captain Cled Jones was in action for the visitors but he found the iceman Clive Morgan 2x100,140 too hot to handle as the home side took the leg to end a thrilling match. Division Three. Merthyr Vale Ex Club (Daggers) 8 v Angel Hotel 3. The Angels trip to the “Daggers” turned out to be a very painful one as they were put to the sword by their hosts going down to heavy 8-3 defeat. The “Daggers” were quick to make a point breaking throw in the opening triples and then holding in the second for a 2-0 lead. J. Tarr 100 was on target for the home side in the first leg with Steve Llewellyn 100 & J. Rudge 140 finding their range in the second. J. Tarr 100 & G. Robertson took the first pairs against the throw to make it 3-0 to the hosts and then further wins for the pairings of Steve Llewellyn 140/Harry Morgan 100 & Steve Probert/J. Murtagh made it 5-0 going into the singles. J. Tarr 100 increased the Daggers lead to 6-0 taking the first singles before M. Davies stopped the rot with victory in the second singles but their relief was brief as Steve Llewellyn 100,125 took the next for a 7-1 lead. Fine games form Glen Callan and Steve George scored them valuable victories over Harry Morgan and G. Robertson respectively to earn two more valuable points for the Angel before J. Rudge 100 took the last leg the remaining leg for the home side to complete a vital win. Imperial Hotel 7 v Lantern Inn 4. The Lanterns light was dimmed on their latest venture as they went down to the hosts at their “Imp” by a 7-4 score line but they can take great credit from their battling performance. L. Russell 2x100 helped the visitors take the first triples leg with the darts but the home side quickly drew level with Chris Llewellyn 100 finding the range despite Greg Kendall notching 2x100 for the away side. Liam Russell hit 2x100 for the Lantern in the first pairs but it was to no avail as Jason Launchbury 100,140 & Anthony Prosser took the leg to give the home side a 2-1 lead. Further wins for the home side from the darting duos of Chris Llewellyn 100/Marsden Evans & John Donovan 140/Rob Stevens saw the home side make a clean sweep of the pairs for a 4-1 lead going into the singles. Liam Russell 140 claimed the first singles against the darts to put the Lantern back into the match but then a hard fought game between Anthony Prosser 100 and Greg Kendall saw Anthony edge the game to gain another point for the Imp. The remaining four legs all went against the throw with T. Goode 140 and S. Ball winning their games for the visitors with Marsden Evans and Paul Prosser claiming the points for the home side. Merthyr Football Club “A” 7 v Penydarren Club “A” 4. G. Jones recorded 2x100 for the “Pen” in the opening triples but the leg went against the darts with the home side replying through M. Davies & G. Moore registering a “ton” apiece. The second triples saw the hosts hold throw with Jamie Phillips 100 & L. Morgan 2x100 helping them to a 2-0 lead. M. Davies & L. Morgan “ton” apiece helped the home side register a 3-0 with victory in the first pairs and 4-0 quickly appeared courtesy of Jamie Phillips & W. Davies. The last of the pairs legs saw the “Pen” make their first mark on the scoreboard with captain Phil Bond 124 & Jonathon Evans claiming a well deserved point. The Football “A” started the singles at breakneck speed with L. Morgan, G. Moore and Jamie Phillips recording great wins over J. Sedgemore, Michael Bond 2x140 and R. Beynon in that order. The last three singles were a complete reversal as Nigel Owen 140, C. Richards and Phil Bond claiming three precious points for the visitors. Division Four. Lord Raglan “A” 2 v Dynevor Arms 9. A nervy start to the match saw both triples legs go against the arrows despite a fine effort from R. Lee 100,140 for the Dyn in the first game. S. Barnett 2x100 was in great shape for the visitors in the second leg helping them draw level as the teams set up for the pairs legs. Phil Lewis & R. Lee took the first of the pairs legs for the away side giving them a 2-1 lead and they went on to make a clean sweep of the pairs with S. Barnett/S. O’Sullivan & Kerry Lloyd/M. Edwards giving them a very healthy 4-1 lead going into the singles. Kerry Lloyd 2x100,138 made it 5-1 with victory over Alan Driscoll before veteran Bryn Lewis beat M. Edwards earning the home side a second point. A blast from the past saw veteran Terry Barnett return to the Merthyr League after a 100 year absence but despite a fine 125 he could not mark his return with a win as missed doubles allowed John Harnedy to take the leg for the Dyn. Further wins for R. Lee, Phil Lewis and S. Barnes then completed a comfortable victory for the away side. Rose & Crown 2 v Anchor Inn 9. No this is not a misprint, the Anchor did record a fantastic and surprise 9-2 victory over their hosts at the Rose & Crown in a division that is proving to be very exciting and certainly very unpredictable. The visitors took both triples in a fast start to the game and added the first pairs with R. Evans & Ian Daley holding throw over Alan Evans 132 & B. Edwards. Phil Hughes & S. Hughes took the second pairs for the hosts to get them up and running before Gareth Price & Anthony Dawes 140 made it 4-1 to the Anchor going into the matching deciding singles matches. R. Evans 140, Ian Daley 125 and Anthony Dawes claimed the first three singles for the visitors with wins over P. Lewis 125, Alan Evans 100 and S. Hughes 100 respectively before Phil Hughes pulled a much needed second point back for the home side. S. Davies 140 and Gareth Price 2x100 were the victors of the last two legs for a delighted Anchor team beating Steve Evans and Kevin Morgan. Mountain Ash Inn 4 v Farmers Arms “B” 7. The Mt still continue to find their feet in the league after their late entry but much to their credit they put in battling performances every week making their opponents work really hard for their points. The Farmers took both triples legs as their hosts missed a couple of shots at a double and they added the first pairs through Stewart Charleston 140 & Dean Moulds before Gerwyn Marshall & Nigel Nicholas took the second to get the home side into the match. Keith Westcott & N. Williams made it 4-1 to the visitors taking the last pairs leg ahead of the singles. Stewart Charleston 2x100,140 made it 5-1 to the away side with victory in the first singles before an amazing second saw Aaron Baigrie 125,140 beat Dean Moulds 2x100, 123 to earn the hosts a much deserved second point. Gerwyn Marshall claimed a third point for the home side in beating Neil Roberts 100 before B. Evans 100 and N. Williams claimed legs nine and ten for the Farmers. Jamie Harris put in a fine display in the last leg to take the game against the throw and with it a fourth point for the battling Mount. Farmers Arms “A” 6 v Winchester Bar 5. On paper you would have thought that the Farmers would have won this match by a bigger margin but unfortunately for the home side the game is not played on paper. Wayne Morgan 140 helped the home side take the first triples against the darts and they held throw to take the second for a 2-0 lead despite a very brave effort from Anthony Lennon 116, 140. K. Pike 121 & Paul James got the Winch into the game taking the first pairs with throw and the remaining two pairs also went with throw with Mike Terrett/Rhian Evans taking their leg for the hosts and T. Williams 100/C. Pike likewise for the Winch giving the home side a slender 3-2 lead going into the singles matches. Fine displays from T. Williams and Andrew Morgan 2x100 saw the visitors turn the tables to take a 4-3 lead but back came the home side to level through Wayne Morgan at 4-4. K. Pike 117,137 nudged the visitors ahead again at 5-4 but the lead was short lived as Rhian Evans 2x100 beat Anthony Lennon 111 to square the match at five apiece with one leg remaining. A tense nail biting last leg saw Mike Terrett break the throw of J. Peters and hearts of the Winch as the home side took the match by the narrowest of margins. Division Five. Morlais Tavern “B” 8 v Great Western Hotel 3. This is another division that throws up strange and unexpected results that would see even John McCirrick struggle to predict a winner. Both triples legs went against the throw in a cagey start to the game which saw the sides level going into the pairs matchups. Gary Flye & M. Davies 100,140, 89 out took the first pairs leg against the darts and with L. Williams & J. Cowle holding the second the Morlais set up a 3-1 lead before C. Arthur & H. Meredith cut the gap to one point going into the vital match deciding singles. Gary Flye 2x100,101 took the first singles for the hosts in a thrilling win over Mike Dale making it 4-2 and further wins for M. Davies 100,140, A. Jones and A. Williams stretched the lead to 7-2 before T. Broad 100,101 put a temporary halt on the slide with victory over L. Williams against the darts. J. Crowle 140 took the last leg for the Morlais beating M. O’N eill. Cardigan Arms 6 v Llwyn-Yr-Eos Inn 5. This was a fine match and a credit to both sides as they gave their all in pursuit of the points to improve their respective league positions. The Cardi took the opening triples against the throw but the Llwyn were quick to reply as they levelled going into the pairs matches. D. Thomas 100 & D. Day 100 held throw in the first pairs to edge the Llwyn ahead but soon it was all square again with Mark Edwards & Kevin Creswell taking the second. Craig Clayton 100,135 & Bernard Clayton looked all set to take the last pairs against the throw for the home side but F. Murphy & Alan Foley refused to give up and battled away to take the leg for the visitors giving them a3-2 lead ahead of the singles. Craig Clayton 2x100 took the first singles against F. Murphy 140 to square at 3-3 but back came the away side with D. Thomas bagging 2x100 to nudge his side ahead again. In a topsey turvey game Nathan Price 100 hit back for the home side and then the pendulum swung the other way with D. Day 100 putting the visitors just one point away form victory at 4-5. Kevin Creswell 100 then levelled again at five apiece leaving a last leg shoot out that saw the Cardi’s Mark Edwards keep calm to beat Alan Foley and win a thriller for a delighted home side. Cyfarthfa Arms 6 v Colliers Cwtch “B” 5. This was another closely fought affair which saw the home side hang on for the narrowest of victories in a battle of two evenly matched sides. The Cwtch took both triples legs with D. Minnett 2x100 impressing for the visitors in the second game as they took a 2-0 lead heading into the pairs. H. Jones & J. Tranter 100 apiece claimed the first pairs against the darts to get the hosts into the game and with Dean Bracegirdle & Dominic Illari holding throw in the next the scores were level but soon the visitors were back in front with D, Minnett & K. Gledhill holding throw to take the final pairs for a 3-2 lead going into the singles. J. Tranter 140 took the first singles with the arrows the level at 3-3 before wins for H. Jones and J. Russell over C. Jones and B. Rae 118 respectively saw the home side turn the tables to lead at 5-3. M. Evans kept the game alive taking the ninth leg for the Cwtch but Dean Bracegirdle assured victory for the Cyfarthfa in the next with a narrow win over D. Minnett. Ken Gledhill took the final point of the match for the visitors with a fine win over J. Toye to end a thoroughly entertaining encounter
