Would the Committee be interested in contributing to the Mayors Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan? Mayor Weinberger has also released the City of Burlington Diversity & Equity Strategic Plan to the City Council this week. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee was formed on July 16, 2012 to develop the Plan with full support from the Mayor. Over the past two years, the Committee along with the Vermont Partnership for Fairness & Diversity have worked towards its completion. It contains 33 findings, 31 recommendations, and 49 action steps. The action steps address three goals: eliminate race-based disparities across all City departments, promote inclusion and engagement for all community members, and eliminate race-based disparities in the greater Burlington community. The recommendations and the associated action steps in the Plan are serious and substantive. For implementation, the steps require different levels to enact, and some require further discussion before they can be carried out effectively. The Mayor has directed his staff (including the City Attorney) to separate the recommendations and action plans into four categories; (i) recommendations or action steps that are being implemented by the Mayor independently; (ii) measures that require review and action by the City Council; (iii) measures that require changes to the City Charter; and (iv) measures that require further discussion prior to implementation. The Mayor prioritized measures focused on City Departments, which will ensure the internal processes and procedures are appropriate. For the full memo, click here.
