Would you be willing risk death to catch a glimpse of the unknown? The subjects of 1924s EPIC OF EVEREST, famed mountain climbers George Malloy and Sandy Irvine, proved that they were. Their lives were lost in an early attempt to surmount the worlds tallest mountain, but their deaths were not in vain. The expeditions videographer John Noel captured some of the earliest known footage of Tibet and her courageous people, allowing all of us to share the glimpse Malloy and Irvine were willing to die for. The film, one of the most historically significant recordings ever made, captures the warmth and vitality of Tibetan culture in the face of the extreme vulnerability and isolation imposed by Mount Everest. The Epic of Everest is screening at the Rubin Museum of Art on select dates through November and December. Tickets and more information are available at their website: rubinmuseum.org/everest
