Would you descibe God as a democrat or as a dictator? If you call God a democrat, you will not be wrong and if you call Him a dictator, it wont be seen as heresy. God is a nondescript God. He is everything you perceive Him to be. For me, I look at God with the lens of the 6 Blindmen of Hindustan. Do you remember that poem we read in primary school, the 6 blindmen who went to see the elephant? In case your memory has gone dim, when those men went to see the elephant, each of them felt a different part of the elephant and drew his own private conclusion. One felt the body of the elephant and said the elephant is like a wall and the other felt the ear and concluded that the elephant is like a fan. The list goes on. Up till now, the world is still looking at God from that perspective. A blind world comes to see the elephant God. What is their conclusion? God is a democrat; He is an autocrat. God is good; God is merciful. God is God.There is no God!, some fools conclude. Dont be quick in condemning them. There is a lot of wisdom in learning not to condemn a man until you have walked in his shoes for a mile. God is not angry with those atheists who challenge His existence. He only needs to prove Himself to them. We must not criticise them. They are challenging Gods existence, not your own existence and God alone knows how to convince them about His own existence. But the big irony is that the atheists are often caught screaming, Thank God I dont believe in God! I make no bones about peoples belief or nonbelief in God. As for me and my family, we will be counted on the Lords side, come hell or highwater. But this is not the original thrust of this writing. I seek to point out that God is at once indescribable and nondescript. If you belong to the intelligent design school of thought it means you believe that somebody, an ultraintelligent Maker or Being is in charge of this world. He made the world and is taking full charge and care of the world. The world is too well designed to have come from a mere evolution of material forces and all that. That means I have mentioned the other school of thought in passing, which is deliberate. Now going back to the intelligent design school, you could take God to be a democrat. After all, God said in Genesis 1:26, Let us make man in our own image! But before then God was busy dictating His desires upon the world. For instance, when He said in verse 3, Let there be light, and there was light, does that expression depict God as being democratic? You can multiply such examples. Throughout Isaiah, God is busy telling us that no man can thwart His plans and purposes. Put in other words, God is simply saying that He does not take instructionor advice or opinion from anybody. After all, when God said, Let us make man in our own image! , He might have asked, Do we make man in our own image? or Do we have to make man at all?, etc? Walter Reuther once wrote: If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it just may be a duck. If I may borrow that wisdom: if He looks like a dictator, talks and behaves like a dictator, then He may just be a dictator. But on the other hand, when God said, Let us make man in our own image!, it is possible that He was evincing some democratic traits except that the audience and company had no way to counter Gods suggestion as a result of the quality of that suggestion. In that case, its like a Chairman who has come up with a faultless suggestion during a meeting. You just find the other members of the meeting shouting, Good wine needs no bush! So back to the question, would you desctibe God as a democrat or as an autocrat? Even if you describe God as a democrat or as a dictator, one thing is abundantly clear, and that is that God is a benevolent God Who is always thinking about the best ways to make us happy. Therefore, it wont matter whether God is a democrat or a dictator as long as we find Him helping us in our confounded world.
