Wow! Ang bait pala talaga ng Australia ...laging may saklolo sa Pinas! *** UN Appeals for US$46.8M for Quake Victims; Australia Pledges AUS$3.1 M MANILA, Philippines – The United Nations announced its appeal for international aid amounting to $46.8 million for the victims of the Oct. 15 earthquake in Bohol and Cebu, Philippines. A string of events left so many people in need, and the region devastated — successive storms that flooded many areas, the Zamboanga rebellion that devastated many residents and left more than 140 dead, and the recent 7.2-magnitude quake that caused major destruction and desolation, with more than 200 dead and 35,000 families in need of emergency shelter and assistance for basic needs. Luizha Carvalho, a UN resident humanitarian coordinator, has this to say: “At this moment, the Philippines is the one (country) that really stands alone with the highest of needs and the highest requirements. We have a very interesting pattern of several events that are happening almost simultaneously and we still hope for the generosity of the donors.” Carvalho disclosed that UN aid agencies were able to raise $43 million for typhoon Pablo victims and $26 million for Zamboanga’s restorative efforts. She adds, “The international community are very generous if they are able to see a good argument and a good case that is put together… and that is what we find in the Philippines.” Praveen Agrawal, a representative from the World Food Program, is concerned that a great number of quake survivors are in danger from heavy rains owing to the fact that they are presently still depending on makeshift tents as shelter. “We need to move fast. If we are overtaken by rains, the situation could become even more serious.” Following the appeal of the UN, the Australian Government announced on Friday that Australia will grant up to P124 million (A$3.1 million) in ‘response to the increasing humanitarian needs following the destruction caused by the earthquake in Central Visayas last October 15.’ Bill Tweddell, the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines says, “The devastation caused by the earthquake, particularly in Bohol, is enormous and staggering. With more than 200 lives lost, 380,000 people displaced, and ongoing aftershocks that aggravate people’s suffering, the extent of assistance required is also massive.” To read more: (Thank you for liking and sharing the link.) kickerdaily/un-appeals-for-us46-8m-for-quake-victims-australia-pledges-aus3-1-m/
