Wow......I got hit with a double whammy today. A high volume hazmat shipper that I had found to be having some problems thanked me for working with them to improve their process and compliance (his people are the ones that did it, I just used some inspectors discretion, kept coming back, suggested some things they could do different/better and helped get them pointed the right way). And an hour later my boss thanks me for taking this job and heaped quite a bit of praise on me that I would be embarrassed to post here. Now Im just a try-to-do-the-right-thing type of guy and Im far from perfect. But I have to say that felt GOOD. And its really cool to have magically landed in a job in a field I really love where I can help people improve the way they do things, and maybe even lift some people up in the process. Job satisfaction in the railroad industry is something you definitely take when you can get it! It reminds me of when I was in my first railroad Management assignment, and the day finally came when our Divisions T&E employees made it a full year without an injury. We had a traditionally bad safety record and it took almost two years of work by our team, but we did it. I felt like we (and I) had helped make a difference for our employees by helping them to help themselves and together we had achieved what I think was a first for the division. That was an amazing feeling. Today made me feel like perhaps Im still making a difference in my career during my little detour to the public sector. I am blessed and very grateful, and I thank the Lord for that. :)
