Wow. Just moments ago, I was exiting the Nugget Market in West Sacramento when, ahead of me, a young man grabbed a bouquet of flowers and walked briskly, even jogging a couple steps, out the door. Why? I wondered. I half-expected him to give them to a pretty girl, one of those youll-never-see-her-again-go! situations. Instead, he caught up to a short, stout, gray haired women pushing her cart toward her car. From my distance, I could not hear them, but I could tell the young man said a few words and then held out the bouquet to her. She paused only a second before taking the flowers and laying them in the child seat of the cart, beside her purse. As the young man turned and walked back into the store, the woman reached up to her face and dragged a finger across her cheek just below her glasses, surely wiping away a tear - a tear that had not had time to fall in those few seconds. That explained it. But I needed to know for sure, so amazed was I by the beauty of what Id just witnessed. I put my bag in my truck and went back into the store. I spotted the young man bagging groceries. I approached and asked, Excuse me, but what just happened where you gave those flowers to that woman? The female cashier to his left smiled as the bag boy replied, She had just explained her situation, some hard times, to her (he gestured toward the cashier), and we are allowed to give flowers to customers once in a while. I immediately felt myself choke up and tears well up in my eyes. Oh, my god, I said, Im about to cry. Me, too, said the cashier. The bag boy smiled and nodded as if to say Me, too as well. I turned and walked away, partly to keep us all from bursting into tears. I know my lips moved as I thought to myself, over and over, as I walked back to the truck: Amazing. (Sidenote: Is it any wonder that the Nugget Market makes Fortune Magazines 100 Best Places to Work list year-after-year?) I dont know for certain that the kind act performed by the cashier and the bag boy will positively impact the woman who received the flowers, but it certainly impacted me. And I couldnt wait to get home and share it with you!
