I was surprised and honored to be named the new Chief of Surgery at the Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network Osborn Hospital for January 2015. Many people have become aware of this position through medical drama television shows like “Grey’s Anatomy”. It is quite a responsibility, as the “buck stops” at my desk whenever there is a significant clinical issue involving a surgery patient. I am excited and energized to do my best at adjudicating so many potential conflicts and issues that can arise in our modern post-Obamacare medical society. New healthcare rules and requirements have many sectors in healthcare jumping to re-invent policy and procedures. It is my sworn ethical duty and responsibility to represent the patient’s best interests and uphold the highest quality care in our hospital. I believe at Scottsdale Osborn we will be an “oasis of quality” in the coming sea of administrative complexity, with depersonalized pressures being brought upon us by government and the insurance industry. I thank my supporters for their faith and trust in me. I thank my teachers for teaching me to “always do the right thing”. I thank my patients for their amazing efforts to recover and get well after illness and adversity challenges them. It is a hard and challenging world we live in. It is difficult to always keep our attitudes positive. Yet somehow with grit and determination, the human spirit always rises above and moves forward. I hope to lead by example, and I believe we can always do better.
