There is no busy rush like in the morning commute in the Grand Central station, neither noisy sound of subway train and traffics. The scene of Manhattan at night at the rooftop is so beautiful. It is like watching some twinkling stars and lights of ships over the night sea where immense scale of whales may sleep in. The city is dynamic and energetic. Some percussion sound, that I hear at the subway station and on the street make me visualize the African patterns. The light on smoke from street vendor makes a block as forest in the fog. Night view of New York reminds me a huge thread ball, which is tangled by divers colors of thread. The street is filled with diverse energy from all different kinds of people and culture. The lights of traffic and signals decorate all the streets and avenues. Looking whole city lights from the sky, it makes me feel like I see a big circuit board. My skateboard wheels draw lines and curves in the raw concrete and asphalt street, such as lines flow in my painting. My first experience of seeing the skyline of Manhattan was at the top of the Rockefeller Center. When I moved to NY first time, with nothing but hope, my mother visited to see me in a while. We saw the skyline at the top of the building together. She said the view looks amazing but felt something sad. I wished it’s not a last chance to see the Manhattan night. But in a same time the city was gleaming, as it is utterly indifferent to all my feelings. But it was so great to see the skyline of Manhattan after I came back to the city in two years. Although the fact that my life is all same (still restless and moves forward fast). But seeing the sparkling city’s light at night, I feel like it soothes me or sometimes still now. I can smile and say goodnight to the city where full of hope, love, devotion, loneliness, exclusivism and competition. I say goodnight to the city of hope, love, devotion, loneliness, exclusivism and competition 굿판처럼 나를 흔들어 깨우는 대낮의 시곗바늘을 쫓는 바쁜 걸음 소리, 시끄러운전철 소리, 택시 소리, 다운타운의 더러운쓰레기 냄새, 버스의 소음들은 모두 없다. 고층 건물 옥상에서 본 맨해튼의 밤의 풍경과 고층 빌딩들의 잔잔한 불빛은 그저 고요하고 아름답다. 마치 거대한 고래들이 잠든 밤바다 위에 작은 어선들과 별들을 떠올리게 한다. 낮에 지하철에서 들었던 지하도 버킷 드러머의 리듬은 머릿속에 여러 가지 아프리카의 패턴을 형상화 하고, 스트리트 벤더의 연기를 비추는 불빛은 거리를 안개섞인 숲으로 만든다. 뉴욕의 밤은 가지각색의 사람들의 채우는 거리의 에너지, 신호등, 택시의 불빛과 건물의 조명은 전자 회로 같은 맨해튼의 건물 숲 속을 채우는 형형 색색의 실타래 같다. 그 요란하고 잠들지 않는 도시의 콘크리트와 아스팔트 위로 내 스케이트보드 바퀴는 패턴 속 곡선과 같은 궤적을 그리며 가로지른다. 가장 처음 본 맨해튼의 야경은 록펠러 센터에서였다. 가진 것 하나 없이 희망 단 하나만 믿고 뉴욕으로 건너간 아들을 보기 위해오신 어머니를 관광 시켜드리기 위해 봤었다. 어머니는 야경이 아름다우면서도 슬프기도 하다고 했고, 나 또한 그 야경을 볼 수 있는 마지막 기회가 아니길 바랬다. 그 시기의 매일 매일은 내 것이 아닌 듯 한치 모르게 불안했지만, 반면, 화려하고 고요한 맨해튼 야경은 내 마음과 달리 그저 무심하게 빛나고 있었다. 하지만 다시 돌아온 이래 지금 바라보는 뉴욕의 야경은 예전과 조금 다르다. 여전히 앞날은 불안하고 내일도 변함없이 빠르게 지나겠지만, 밤 하늘 아래 반짝이는 많은 인파의 에너지와 잠들지 않는 불빛들을 보며 하루하루를 보며 내 마음은 조용히 치유한다. 수많은 사람들의 희망, 사랑, 헌신, 외로움, 배타와 경쟁으로 뒤설키며 빛나는 거대한 도시에게 굿나잇 인사를 건네며. via yoonhyup/
