Wow, this week we have exciting Sea Shepherd updates with Captain Paul Watson on State of the Oceans, latalkradio/Oceans.php. Joining us from Hong Kong, will be Gary Stokes, Asia Director at Sea Shepherd Global, Director and Founder of Oceanic Love. Also joining us is Tim Zimmermann, a Correspondent with Outside magazine, an Associate Producer and Co-Writer of Blackfish, and a vegan, who writes frequently about animal welfare issues, the environment, and the oceans. Tune in Wed, Sept 17th at 11am Pacific! GARY STOKES Photographer / Ocean Conservation Activist Gary Stokes is a photographer and ocean conservationist and is currently the Asia Director of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. British born but raised on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Cyprus, he currently lives in Hong Kong with his wife and two children. Whether working as an independent photojournalist or with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Gary has spent the past 15 years raising awareness to the plight of our oceans. As a diving instructor and underwater photographer he has witnessed first-hand the degradation of the marine environment all over the world. In 2010 Gary was offered to join Sea Shepherds Operation: No Compromise and spent 4 months at sea onboard the M/Y Bob Barker as the campaign photographer. This was the start of his pathway into Sea Shepherd. Based in Hong Kong, Gary has focussed a lot of his time exposing the shark fin trade. In 2012 he discovered an entire backstreet covered with shark fins drying and his video went viral, this was then followed by a discovery of shark fins drying on a rooftop New Years morning 2013. This exposure has helped put the scale of the shark fin trade into perspective for the everyday person and his images have appeared on newspapers and news networks globally. In 2012/13 he worked to expose a senior Singaporean official holding a high level position within the United Nations CITES who was using his position to block all shark protection for the past 17 years. He was also discovered to be a representative for the shark fin traders of Hong Kong and Singapore, a clear conflict of interest. This culminated in Gary representing Sea Shepherd for the first time ever at the CITES CoP16 held in Bangkok where 5 sharks and two Mantas finally received protection. Since joining Sea Shepherd Global as the Asia Director he has been working to establish a presence on the ground for Sea Shepherd. Establishing chapters in the Asian region as well as connecting with Govt’s, Law Enforcement Agencies and local NGO’s/scientists to assist in conservation efforts across Asia, providing international support to local issues. Other achievements have been; Removing bluefin tuna from all supermarkets in Hong Kong, as well as the Asia Seafood Expo. Led HK Govt’s cleanup operations of 150 tons of pre-production plastic pellets that were washed up on our beaches after a Typhoon 10, recovering 105 tons. Largest plastic spill in history. Getting CITES to adopt a Conflict of Interest resolution Convincing airlines/shipping lines to ban shark products (Emirates/Asiana/Korean/Quantas/CMA CGM) Campaigned Groupon to remove all shark products Conducted anti-poaching patrols in HK waters alongside HK Marine Police and busted mainland poachers, forcing the HK judiciary to increase the penalties as a further deterrent. Tim Zimmermann is a Washington-based journalist and a Correspondent with Outside magazine.
