Wow whatta a descriptive write up by Zia Ahmed! For everyone to know, Zia Ahmed is the amazing voice over artist who has worked on the promo video of our Zurich event! Thanks Zia, we are much thankful for your wishes. Regards Biju Nair & Runa Sikdar An Evening in Zurich’… Prelude... Remember in one of your vintage song moods, when the radio played that soulfully romantic ‘Baharon phool barsaao from ‘Suraj’, or the expressively ‘shayrana’ ‘kahin BeKhayal Ho Kar’ from ‘Teen Deviyan’, the delightfully peppy ‘Peete peete kabhi kabhi yun jam’ from ‘Bairaag’, the sprightfully playful ‘Deewaane ka naam to puchho’ from ‘An Evening in Paris’, inebriated in love ‘Chhhalkaye jam’ from ‘Mere Humdum Mere Dost’ or that forever romantic ‘Likhe jo khat tujhe’ from ‘Kanyadaan’, (to name just a few),….as if on cue…the handsome smiling visages of the ‘singing’ leading Men…Rajendra Kumar, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra & Shashi Kapoor came into view...romancing, cavorting their on-screen lady loves! But what got us totally mesmerized was the ‘real’ voice behind the screen…the most mellifluous on earth to ever playback for these Dashing young men…with the kind of versatility, range and ease, it made the listener feel as though the hero was ‘himself’ singing – that for us was the heaven sent magical voice of one (and only) ‘Mohammed Rafi’ ! Likewise Kishore Kumar…the multi-faceted genius that he was, when he started as a hero, Kishoreda did his own playback (quite naturally!) before belting out timeless hits for Superstars like Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand and indeed every big and not-so-big hero of the 70s & 80s. Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey were all greats in their own right! And what to speak of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle…they have transcended musical genres and given their billions of fans an all-side perspective of the music spectrum. The songs of these geniuses stand immortalized…from here to eternity. Sadly most of these legendary virtuosos (barring the Mangeshkar sisters – one prays they remain with us for much longer) have passed on, leaving behind an enormous vacuum in the Hindi music firmament…as indeed a longing in our hearts and minds. Didn’t one sometimes wish one could turn the clock and have them back singing before us LIVE!? We die-hard fans often delve in the realms of our musical fantasy… Postlude… Well…these were just the kind of thoughts playing on my mind as I went to watch Runa & Biju’s Live show RAJKUMAR – ‘Celebrating Shammi Kapoor concert’ here in Bangalore recently. And as the evening progressed one just sat in wonderment, marveling at the ease and poise with which Biju Nair slipping into Rafi sahib’s Giant shoes, belting out 1 chart-buster after another, from films of the legendary Shammi Kapoor. That indeed was a revelation! What I observed…and when you guys in yonder Zurich go out to watch Biju perform LIVE on the 15th instant, you will too…that without being a Rafi or Mukesh or a Hemant Kumar sound-alike, Biju has developed a beautifully mellifluous voice…all his own…very easy on the ears. And on stage…can he charm! Well ladies in the audience are warned…for if I may say this in hindi…’Dil Thham ke baithna…chura jaaane ka khatra hai’! Same message for the men in the audience…albeit with a corresponding gender flip…well we are actually talking of the very lovely ‘Rithisha Padmanabh’ – the sultry siren who can sing solos and leads totally seamlessly. So hold your hearts and get ready to be bewitched by this silky voiced seductress! Then you have the soothingly mellow Aishwarya Kashinathan, the very youthful Raghupati Jha and our very own ‘Kishoreda’…Haris Karot! I had a blast watching the show. You too will…that’s guaranteed! So get set to be enthralled by an evening of finely crafted tunes to the magical accompaniment of Pradeep Patkar & his orchestra, their harmonies clean, sharp and on perfect pitch! Get set for…‘Its Showtime Entertainment’s ‘An Evening in Zurich’ – Designed and Presented by that enterprising powerhouse we all know and love - Runa Sikdar! Treat yourself…To the best of the year! It’s ‘an evening’ (like that narrator in the teaser promo says) ‘you’ll never forget’ ! ZIA AHMED
