Write up from McNeely Lake meet director Louis Smith: Thanks - TopicsExpress

Write up from McNeely Lake meet director Louis Smith: Thanks to everyone who came out on a cold, partly overcast, Saturday. We had a monster meet with over 150 participants. We did have a little problem with the map; the parks department started a major construction the week before the meet. Fortunately it only effected the far eastern part of the map. They eliminated about 20 acres of trees, turning that section of the park into a dirt patch plus a few new short “trails”. Luckily this only seriously impacted the Orange and Red courses with a little confusion thrown in on the Green course. On the Red course, Aaron Smith inched out Bruce Moore by 3 minutes; 76:40 to 79:42. Aaron Conway of Warren East HS finished 3rd in 88:11. I was a hotly contested race. Ben King took the lead at the first control, then Pete Godby took over for the next three. He was overtaken by Moore at #5, who held on until Aaron smoked past him going to #8. Aaron held on to the lead from that point. Evan Wisto of Apollo HS took first on the Green course in a snappy 59:27, inching out grizzled veteran Dan Mattingly (63:13). Alex Izzo and Ken Kling took 3rd and 4th. Brianna Daugherty of Apollo finished 6th but was the first female finisher. Dan lead for the first half of the race with Wisto passing him at #10. William Moon (116:18) finished first on Orange, followed by 3 Daviess County HS cadets. Second place finisher, Mark Cannon (119:28), made a strong run at the end but came up short. There were 60 competitors on the Yellow course. Issac Lambert (42:14) and Jesse Anderson (42:58), both of Daviess County, battled it out for first place along with Caudill Blake (43:53) of N. Bullitt. Lambert took the lead by beating both from the last control to the finish. One oddity on the Yellow was that 10 people were disqualified because they failed to punch the last control????? This included one young lady who would have finished third overall except for this error. I should mention that my granddaughter, Savannah Bishop, won the White course. Her father assures me that she did all the navigating. Special thanks to my two assistants, Laurie Bishop and Emily Roach. Laurie designed the Orange course and streamered a lot of the controls and Emily designed Yellow. Laurie set out several controls on Thursday. Both girls came in early on Saturday to finish setting up (Emily did so after attending a concert in Cincinnati on Friday night). On meet day, Laurie helped with registration while Emily sat a lonely post at the start. Emily also picked up a ton of controls after the meet. Also picking up controls was Bruce Moore, Louis Smith and Alex Izzo (of the Bloomington, IN area). Special thanks to Ken Kling for getting out the results. Results are posted on the OLOU web site and also at Attack Point: attackpoint.org/eventdetail.jsp/event_22691 Louie Smith, meet director.
