Writer in a Hat of the Week: Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, has a birthday this month. This American author & humorist helped create & popularize a distinctive American literature, built on American themes & language. Many of Twains works have been suppressed at times for various reasons, & a complete bibliography of his works is nearly impossible to compile because of the vast number of pieces written by Twain, often in obscure newspapers, & his use of several different pen names; additionally, a large portion of his speeches & lectures have been lost or were never written down. His novels, in addition to chronicling the adventures of his young heroes Tam Sawyer & Huckleberry Fez, include The Prince and the Pillbox, Puddnhat Wilson, & A Derby Barrelled Detective Story.
