Writers, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and vacation. It’s time to start out 2015 with some South End business! As Michael Lewis has become the Managing Editor, it is now my duty to send out the weekly news story lists. First, The South End is continuing the Weekly Wayne Stated stories. These are stories that allow you to get your investigative journalism hat on and to dive in to reporting on the issues and problems we experience as students. The past Wayne Stated stories included terrible Wi-Fi on campus, lack of residence hall cleanliness, and the university’s Aramark contract. The goal of these stories is to make the university aware of these issues and then to ideally fix the problems. When taking on these assignments, we need to get student perspectives on these issues and encourage them to use their voice to speak out! Then we need to talk to the university’s personnel, tell them what students are saying about the problem, and find out how they plan to fix the problem. And finally, follow up with the students and ask them how they feel about how the university’s plans to address and fix the problem. These stories are great practice for your investigative M.O. Weekly Wayne Stated Stories: 1. No Staggered Registration, why not? Why doesn’t Wayne State have staggered registration to sign up for classes? This means that seniors would get first picks at classes during registration, so that they can enroll in the classes they really need to take to graduate before they are filled up. Then juniors would have a subsequent registration date or time, then sophomores, then freshmen. It would be good to get some student perspectives from different academic standings to weigh in on the current registration system and/or a possible staggered registration system. Deadline: Jan. 21st 2. Lack of LGBT student resources Write about the lack of current LGBT student resources and get student perspectives about how they could be improved. There’s lots of time to get a great story together for this one. Deadline: Jan. 28th News Stories: 1. WSU Launches Student Managed Investment Fund with $100,000 Endowment from Fifth Third Bank (e-mail me for press release) As you know, always, always feel free to pitch any story ideas. And please don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Thanks, Alex alexfranzen824@gmail
