Writers complain about things for a living but if there is anything I cant stand it is an editor trying to do my job for me. Having had to un-correct my prose a half-dozen times by a various grammar nerds more concerned with correctness than plot, it makes me want to quit and get an MBA. As Raymond Chandler wrote to his editor at The Atlantic, When I split an infinitive, God damn it, I split it so it will stay split, and when I interrupt the velvety smoothness of my more or less literate syntax with a few sudden words of barroom vernacular, this is done with the eyes wide open and the mind relaxed but attentive.
