For those who have only gotten their information about SA from the western media, do yourself a favor and read this book. Mercer doesnt pull any punches. She lays bare many of the facets of the cultural realities of both the New SA and SA of the apartheid era. Mercer is also well qualified to write on both the USA and SA, having lived in both of them. Her research and well documented use of facts and figures is thorough and well laid out. The parallels and consequences for America are obvious (to most of us).
