Written by: Mr. Colion Noir Working on fixing the sites problem for good. Until then a little rant: Many people ask about decreasing violence in the inner city. As a kid, I grew up in a pretty shitty apt complex with my mom in Houston. At the time, my neighbor was running a full blown drug operation and all the older kids I knew were in a gang of some sort. However, I always had my love for basketball as a distraction. At the time, the apt complex did not have a basketball goal. In order to make up for not having a real basketball goal, I would take shopping carts from the Fiesta Grocery and flip them upside down and hang them over the gate which surrounded the complex. I was an only child, so I would spend hours shooting my shitty basketball through the grocery basket. I was lucky, I was never pressured to join a gang. I knew all the gang bangers but they usually let me be because they all thought I would go on to play ball somewhere. However, most kids arent that lucky. The video below touched me on a personal level because its who I was as a kid. This is by no means the absolute way to curve inner city violence, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. You could of put a gun in my hand as a kid and It would of meant nothing to me. I had no reason to shoot or want to shoot anyone so violence wasnt in my frame of reference. I saw a guy jumped within inches of his life, I saw knives, bats, you name it, I saw my neighbor run like a mad man when the cops finally busted him, but the problem was the lifestyle not the objects. I wanted to be a basketball player, the gang lifestyle didnt entice me at all. This kid will never forget this and the standard has been set in this kids mind of what a real man is and should be.
