Written by one of the first responders: After more than 20 years in the Fire and EMS service, it’s rare for me to encounter something or someone that really affects me, but last Saturday I did. Engine and Rescue 14 responded to the Olive Garden in Kissimmee for an ill pregnant female. I think it seemed pretty routine to us. Upon arrival we were escorted past a large party of patrons that we later learned was a baby shower and yes it was for the young lady we would soon be transporting to the hospital. Cari was on the bathroom floor attended by friends and family but we immediately recognized she was in critical condition. Her husband Avery told us she was 28 weeks pregnant with twins. We did everything we could as did the ER Docs, Labor and Delivery Docs, the Trauma surgeon and many nurses and technicians at Osceola Regional Hospital, but Cari and her two unborn children died not long after they arrived. This shook a lot of folks at the hospital and at the fire department. How do you go from a happy celebration to the loss of everything in a matter of minutes? You can never prepare for such hardship. The crew and I stopped by to see Avery yesterday and drop some food off for the family. He told us more about Cari, her battle with breast cancer, and showed us several drawings he had done over the years of her and his family. Turns out, he’s an excellent artist. As we are sharing in the grief of this good man’s loss I asked if he would mind if I shared Cari’s story with you. So if you would like to learn a little more about a real inspirational person and if you would like to give a small donation to help a devastated family out, please take a moment to visit Cari and Avery’s FB page or gofundme/al6nmk. I never had the chance to really meet Cari as a rare aneurism took her life quickly, but from what I’ve learned about her, I know I would of liked her. - Dave Knepper
