Wrote this last year but i still like it Bear claw and Coffee, or Eight Dollar Salvation It’s a hometown coffee shop early on a Monday With bloodshot congregation, the pagan Sunday A line of pennant strangers, waiting holy union Barista priest with apron vestments and eight dollar communion In high tech reverent earbud isolation With sacred pause and contrite dedication The cup the bread The risen dead They wait the Holy Communion They stand together at the alter where they pay For sins committed but unconfessed since yesterday With trembling hands they taste the cup Sweetened but still bitter on their lips While indulgences are bought with liberal tips Bear claw and coffee, self serving sacrament The wholly guilty pleasure observed through lent With zealot fervor and heartfelt adoration A religion unplanned secures its addicted congregation Mark Gibson Jan 10, 2012
