Wrote this story a while ago but I guess it failed to upload. I watched this clip with a giraffe surrounded by six lions. She wouldnt run away even when she had the chance to and even though she had absolutely no fighting chance against the lions. I kept wondering why she didnt run away. As the camera got closer, I saw that the giraffes baby was lying on the ground. It was very obviously dead. As the lions got closer, the mother giraffe kept chasing the lions away and she would run back to her baby and nudge it and lick it to try to get it up. I think she realized that her baby was gone but she just didnt give up. She kept this up until she had no choice but run away, at this point the lions had gotten too close and had started attacking her. Soon as she moved away they started to feed on the body. Even then she would walk two steps and run back to chase the lions away from her baby. This went on until there was nothing left but skin and bones. This made me feel many things. One, if all mothers were like this the world would be a much much better place. Two, this love, the love to compel a mother to protect her dead child like this, even willing to risk her own life to make sure her baby wasnt alone....to be loved like that and to love like that is the greatest honor. Three, I have maternal instinct apparently. To all parents who would die to protect their children, the world salutes you. I salute you. I do hope I get the opportunity one day to love, and be loved like this. Usiku mwema.
