Wyoming coal is the backbone of our states economy and the lifeblood of our nations energy industry. This week I had the opportunity to tour the Thunder Basin Coal Companys Black Thunder Mine near Wright. This mine is the worlds largest open pit coal mine, employing over 1,500 people and providing over 90 million tons of coal annually for 8% of the nations electricity. Collectively, the coal mines throughout the Powder River Basin provide for over 28% of the electricity needs in the USA! Also, every mining job creates nearly four additional ancillary jobs.
