XENOPHOBIA - A NATIONAL SCOURGE . This is more sinister than simplistically meets the eye. If one studies the nature of Democracy as a form of State, one quickly realises that it is in fact one of the worst forms of government. Precisely because it owes existence to mob or herd mentality and aligns itself closely to Nationalism. Together, they speak to the notion of protecting the group against outsiders, foreigners if you will. It is takes but the slightest sleight of hand to translate this ganging up against foreigners into a cohesiveness that in turn translates into Nationalism and its xenophobic underbelly. For Nationalism now read African Nationalism. Read African National Congress. And see a well managed strategic ploy to use the psychology of mob violence in efforts towards retaining power by shifting focus from the real causes of lack of service delivery. It is no accident that their is no political will to deal with the rampant mob rule. But this myopia in politics serves the nation ill, though ancda ideologues are rubbing their hands in glee at quite literally allowing people to get away with murder, if it means being returned to power. The real question that arises, given this not so easily analysed phenomenon, what is our response as COPE.
