XL Pipeline - 4000 construction jobs lasting 2 years and 50 - TopicsExpress

XL Pipeline - 4000 construction jobs lasting 2 years and 50 ongoing operating jobs are the direct job benefits. $50 million in property taxes spread over 29 counties will lead to more government spending in those states. Once we get over the fact governments can and do create permanent jobs, we can acknowledge the increased property taxes will lead to another 1,250 $40k/year jobs, and those new jobs will cause some amount of incremental activity. The risk to the environment includes oil spills and higher green house gases if the oil can not find another path to market. There is also an economic risk. Because there is no direct pipeline, oil is stranded in the mid-west causing lower oil prices where the oil is stranded. The pipeline will result in higher prices in those locations. The pipeline may not have a material effect on oil prices in the US as the oil will likely turn into diesel for export to China. Are those incremental jobs worth the risk to the environment and to the price of oil?
