Xelif Regnu: What Mark’s political map ignores is that opposition to Yanukovitch is being supported materially and verbally by some of the most powerful oligarchs from the EASTERN (supposedly pro-Russian) part of the country. The outrage over Yanukovitch’s cowardly and self-interested decision to reject the Association Agreement with the EU and its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement in favor of a neo-mercantilist imperial zollverein offered by Russia is a betrayal of the aspirations of all Ukrainians not to be members of the EU, but to finally shed the Soviet legacy of corruption, incompetence and degradation. Of course Ukraine is in crisis, because its ruled just like your average Russian provincial jurisdiction: badly and dishonestly. The EU AA and DCFTA are Ukrainians chance to finally exercise sovereignty over their country and the best shot at creating a real rule of law like the kind that is enjoyed in Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia and increasingly in Romania and Bulgaria. Just because they speak Russian does not make people in the East of Ukraine any more tolerant of the blatnoi regime.
