Xena performing Kanku Dai - KATA is a tool for refinement, a constant process. NOT to be judged based on how refined you ARE. Its a tool to be able to judge how far you have come along. ONLY the Sensei knows this. .. This is the problem I have with Sport KATA, Although this was the best Kata Xena had ever done in a tournament, It took years of refinement to get to this point. I am so proud of her. But what people look at are the imperfections. Because they dont know how far the student has come to that point from where used to be. its impossible to gauge how well someone did. Some people just HAVE it, Some work really hard just to get a pinch of it. KATA is a beautiful TOOL to use for that, BUT Sadly even if a student does their BEST, IF its not deemed as good as others in a division, they lose, its a let down in many ways. its not only very subjective in nature, But its not even fair. judges look for the wrong things. They get fooled by stage presence over technical quality, Short gi pants and sleeves with long jackets fool them even more. Extra long Kata are deemed more advanced. Flashy Kata are deemed better.. just like American KROTTY. BUT whats actually is going on will only be known by the practitioner and their sensei and how well the REALLY did. A referee cannot possibly know how far a student has come or improved or what physical disadvantages they may have. in that sense its is not a fair playing ground. Nascar is more fair. The winner has the same car as the drive next to him. Its the skill.. not subjective. If each person had the same physique and ability, it would boil down to skill in Karate also. Im so Proud of Xena with this performance. It was one of the only times she did not hesitate and ran through things confidently... Stances could have been better on a slippery floor but Even though She lost... She still felt good about how she did.. Success is REAL when it happens, even if you dont get a medal for it
