YCLSA Press Statement March 2, 2014 YCLSA welcomes the release of Fernando Gonzalez an internationalist hero The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasmiba) welcomes the release of cde Fernando Gonzalez from US prison after 15 years of unjust incarceration. Cde Fernando is an example to us as young people who hold the vision of a better and just world. He spent two years from 1978- 1989 in Angola fighting against the racist apartheid regime. He sacrificed for a better life for South Africans, Angolans and Namibians while as a university graduate in Cuba he had the world at his feet. The victory of progressive forces in Cuito Cuanavale in 1988 ended South Africa’s colonisation of Namibia and accelerated the mass mobilisation inside South Africa that soon brought the apartheid regime to an end. In the words of the late revolutionary Cde Nelson Mandela: “The Cuban internationalists have made a contribution to African independence, freedom, and justice, unparalleled for its principled and selfless character”. As young people today, we join hands with all justice and peace loving people of the world in celebrating his release from the US prison system. We will continue to campaign for the release of the Cuban Three who remain trapped within the US. We further promise to intensify our campaigns in support of the people of Swaziland, Western Sahara and Palestine. It’s cde Fernando Gonzalez’s example and hundreds of thousands of other Cuban revolutionaries that we turn to for inspiration while standing in solidarity with the oppressed people of the world.
