YELLOWKNIFE WRAP UP Had a nice supper and awards to finish the 2014 race in Yellowknife. Afterwards a group of the 6 dog and 10 dog mushers got together to discuss the weekend. All were happy to have a 6 dog event just some discussion on what the mileage they should race, most thought 16 miles was too long. The main discussion was on the 10 dog and what could be done to improve it. All were concerned about the small entry of 8 teams and the reduced purse. I think most figured there had to be a change in the race distance as most felt the 50 miles per day was too far and too hard to prepare for. Some thought 3 x 25 and other 3 x 35. Of course some wanted to stay with the traditional 50 mile heats. One main concern was how the purse is paid out and most agreed it had to pay more farther down the placings. As everyone who has raced here in the last 10 years knows this race has fell on the shoulders of Grant Beck as he has carried the whole show and quite frankly he needs some help with staging this race. There was discussion on forming a committee comprised of people from the other villages that put races on. They were still debating when we had to leave so not sure how it ended. We are looking for some input from previous racers or those who would like to race YK on what they would like to see the race do. Please post your comments. Thanks
