YOU CAN HELP PROTECT FLORIDA’S WILDLIFE AND WATER RESOURCES A major goal of Bay County Audubon is to support the Florida Water and Land Legacy Campaign in progress. This constitutional amendment campaign seeks to restore the funding to the Water and Land Trust Fund, which allowed the Florida Forever program to function. This program was responsible for buying many state parks, wildlife and water management areas, state forests, greenways and trails and wetlands. Set up by the state legislature 20 years ago as a way to fund our conservation purchases, it was also responsible for managing and restoring these lands. Unfortunately, 4 years ago the legislature diverted 97.5% of this funding (acquired by a portion of the doc. stamp revenue) into the General Fund. Even though these funds amounted to less than one percent of the total state budget, they have not yet been restored to the trust fund. BCAS members and others in the local Legacy Campaign are working hard to get our share of 500,000 petition signatures required to get this on the November, 2014 ballot so Floridians can vote to restore the funding just like it was before. If you haven’t already signed one, and If you are a registered voter, you can help too, by signing a petition, which is now available online. Go to the web site: forfla.org/getform. You can get more information at the campaign web site: floridawaterlandlegacy.org We still need volunteers to help collect petition signatures, so if you can help for a couple of hours, call Ron at 763-7485. We only have until the end of November to get our petitions in.
