HELPING YOUR CHILD EAT RIGHT AND BE ACTIVE (Part 3 of 3) When children eat healthy food and get regular exercise, they feel better and think more clearly. Plus, they may have a lower risk of weight-related health problems. Parents who help their children learn to eat right and be active are giving them a gift that will last a lifetime. Offer three smaller meals and two snacks each day! ü Offer a variety of healthy foods. ü A daily balanced diet for children and teens includes: - Whole-grain bread, cereal and pasta - Fruits and vegetables - Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt - Protein foods such as chicken, beans and eggs Avoid sugary and high-fat foods! ü Offer easy-to-reach snacks of fruit, cheese, yogurt or vegetables. ü Only occasionally serve chips, sodas or cookies. ü Don’t eliminate all fat. Children need some fat (from milk, cheese, nuts or yogurt) for healthy development. Limit meals at fast food restaurants! ü Even “kids meals” may be too high in fat and calories. ü Keep healthy “fast food” in your home. Hear are some ideas: - Sandwich makings that include whole-wheat bread, low-fat cheese or meat, lettuce and tomato - Pasta with sauce. Try grating carrots or zucchini into the sauce for added vegetables, or serve with a salad - Burritos made with low-fat beans, cheese, lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and carrots ü Whenever possible, eat meals with your kids. Studies show that most teens who have a poor diet usually eat alone or with friends, rather than with family.
