Or the arms of a loved one wrapping you in a hug. Maybe your pet curled up in your lap. Touch is an important part of life. It can improve your mind and body. And it’s starting to make a name for itself in health care. Touch and modern health care seem to be worlds apart. But studies are showing just how important touch can be. Like deep breathing, touch is a mind-body technique that can improve your health. It can work to: Get more oxygen flowing through your body Lower your anxiety and reduce your pain Help you cope with stress Help your body fight off infections and heal wounds faster More and more, touch is being used by nurses to help treat their patients. Reassuring touch, such as massage, may help patients feel less anxious and stressed about medical procedures. It may also help them have fewer symptoms, although more research needs to be done in this area. Touch is also critical for newborns and small children. In fact, newborns deprived of touch during their first few weeks can fail to thrive. Stress is an unfortunate side effect of our modern world. So why don’t you try an old-fashioned bit of stress relief? A little bit of happiness might just be a hug away.
