YOUTH AGAINST CORRUPTION TODAY Getting youths involved in discussing corruption is essential to building an understanding of what corruption is and how corruption can affect their future. This week, this is exactly what Youth@Work together with Transparency Solomon Islands is doing during the youth market program. This is a fantastic initiative from the Youth@Work. The Youth market not only provides an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to sell or promote their products, but it is also a chance to raise about issues affecting youths today. This year, Youth@Work is planning a series of youth markets with each having a specific theme that aims to provide important information through music, art and other media. For this youth market the theme is, ‘Youth Against Corruption”. During the market, there will be activities designed to spread the message about corruption and its effect on society. Also, there will be a band competition on the topic of corruption. The theme is well chosen as corruption is a serious and an ongoing issue in the country affecting citizens and residents at all levels of society. Around 29 percent of Solomon Islands population is around the ages of 15-30 while 49 percent at the ages below 15. This shows that Solomon Islands has a very youthful population and needs greater attention to them. But youths are among the most vulnerable to the effects of corruption. Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) understands that young people face a lot of challenges in their day-to-day lives and are forgotten victims of corruption. This event has the potential to bring together youth where they can voice their concerns, opinions and be heard. Young people are the new generation and have the opportunity to change the future. One way they can participate and change the future is to understand corruption and its effect. By understanding the effect of corruption youth can make decisive choices and stay within the boundary of honesty, integrity and good citizenship. Also by understanding corruption and its effects young people can vote wisely for good leaders in this year’s National General Election. Solomon Islands need leaders who are honest, accountable, and transparent and have the ability to steer our country through this difficult stage, where corruption is pulling at the very fabric of our government institutions. Enough of voting in leaders who only care about handing out Constituency Development Funds (CDF) and accumulating private wealth with public money while putting less effort into national issues. This is the kind of information which our youths need leading up to the election this year. TSI will maintain a strong visibility during the event where our team will be engaged directly with youths when disseminating information and host interactive sessions with the crowd. Corruption is everybody’s business which requires all levels of society to address it and its effects. TSI plans to set up a Youth Against Corruption Association.
