Yahoo Newsroom - Hope Dog Rescue said the vet suspected that skeleton dog Elmo hadnt eaten for weeks.(Photo courtesy of Hope Dog Rescue) The plight of another “skeleton dog” has sent shockwaves among animal lovers in Singapore. In a blog post on Friday, animal welfare group Hope Dog Rescue said a man had written to them on Thursday about a grossly emaciated dog named Elmo that he had found a few days back. The photograph (see above) that the man sent to Hope Dog Rescue immediately put the volunteers on panic mode as they “havent seen a skinnier dog other than Prince”, referring to the case of another severely starved dog that was rescued. Prince was a 5-year-old poodle that only weighed 2.8kg when he was found back in April last year, but he has since been nursed back to health by volunteers and his adopters. Hope Dog Rescue said the man informed them that the one-year-old Elmo had not eaten for five days and had been extremely weak and listless, adding that his urine and faeces also contained traces of blood. The animal welfare group then arranged for food to be delivered to the rescuer as well as for the dog to be taken to the veterinarian immediately as the man who rescued the dog has financial difficulties and could barely provide food for the dog. Hope Dog Rescue believe the dog is a local dog, which typically weighs between 15kg and 25kg. Elmo, however, only weighed 8kg. Unlike his namesake, which is furry and cheery, Elmo had no fur and his skin was hardened as it was “grossly dehydrated”, thus the vet struggled to insert the needle and draw blood from Elmo to run a host of tests. Hope Dog Rescue also said the vet suspected that Elmo hadnt eaten for weeks. They added that when they tried giving him food and water, he refused the food. When they tried to put food directly into his mouth, Elmo didnt know how to swallow the food. Results of the blood test showed a high white blood cell count which is indicative of an infection in his tiny body. Elmo is currently being placed on drips with antibiotics, glucose, and multi-vitamins to help boost his immunity, said the animal welfare group. They added that the vet had also placed heat pads and heated body bags around him to help keep him warm. Hope Dog Rescue says that anyone who wants to help with Elmos vet bills can email [email protected]. Please help Elmo.
