Yamhill County Disaster Exercise Thors Revenge In its on-going efforts to practice and improve its readiness posture and county wide response to large scale emergency events, Yamhill County Emergency Management is sponsoring a full scale natural disaster exercise on Wednesday, 14 May 2014. Using an Urban/Wildland Fire interface scenario, Emergency Management will test its Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) focusing on the areas of staffing and operating the Emergency Operations Center (EOC); testing the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) communications network; executing the Emergency Declaration Process; and integrating its volunteer emergency preparedness groups into emergency response efforts. This exercise, which is named “Thor’s Revenge”, will include activities occurring at numerous locations throughout the county. Participating in the exercise is Providence Newberg Medical Center, the City of Yamhill and Yamhill Rural Fire District, McMinnville Police, as well as the Dayton and Sheridan Fire Districts. The volunteer groups assisting in this effort include the county-wide Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES), the Medical Response Corps (MRC), and the American Red Cross. These volunteer groups represent just a few of a large number of volunteer groups who play an active and vital role in community preparedness as well as emergency response within the county. As in an actual emergency event, many of the county’s departments play critical roles in staffing the county Emergency Operations Center with personnel trained in the essential skills to successfully track response efforts, order resources outside of the county capacity, and work with the Board of Commissioners to establish response objectives, execute public notification, and lead recovery efforts. Exercise “Thor’s Revenge” is designed to use a realistic scenario to allow the county departments to practice the vital role of responding to community needs outside the day-to-day routines and expectations. From this effort, the county will strengthen and improve its community preparedness posture.
