Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16 It is a mistake to believe that sweetness is the true measure of a child of God. Jesus called His disciples salt, not sweetness. While the Bible states that God’s Word is sweet, and our offerings to God are characterized as sweet, when it comes to human relationships, sweetness is just as often used to describe false friendship as real. Salt is much more important; it adds and improves flavor in food, can be used as a cleansing agent for wounds (not pleasant, but effective), is a drying and preserving agent, and creates thirst. On the other hand, sweetening agents often provide food for harmful agents such as bacteria and yeasts. If we are to be Christ’s agents in this world, He would have us to be salt and light. Light exposes flaws as well as beauty. This is not always appreciated, just as Jesus was not always appreciated. To be like Jesus, does not mean people will always like me or say I am a nice person. People said terrible things about Jesus, yet, those who are true seekers know Him for who He is, God the Son! Sometimes truth must hurt. Father, help me to always be sensitive to Your leading and not accept the judgment of others who reject Your Truth.
