Yeah, lets create new neighborhoods around the new Coliseum. - TopicsExpress

Yeah, lets create new neighborhoods around the new Coliseum. Meanwhile, in the EXISTING neighborhoods that cover 135 of the 138 square miles of the city, basic city services (FD, EMS, PD, waste management, street lights, schools, parks) are lacking to non-existent. Water shutoffs are temporarily suspended (all the while, millions of gallons are flowing unabated inside abandoned Detroit Public Schools as well as other abandoned buildings in the city. A quote from the piece: The Ilitch family, which owns the Red Wings and Tigers, is calling the new arena district a bold vision that will generate at least $1.8 billion in total economic impact. Renderings were released and neighborhood names coined, because everyone wants sports franchises handling their urban planning. I agree with half that quote. It is, indeed, BOLD. Arrogant, even, I would say. Talk to the MAJORITY OF DETROITERS. You know, the ones that live in the REST of Detroit (the 135 square miles other than downtown and midtown). Ask them how plans to revitalize the (ENTIRE?) city and generate [insert gaudy fictional number here] in total economic economic impact have worked out for THEM during their lifetime. The Renaissance Center, which was designed and built in the 70s to help slow down white flight and help reunite a fractured city (didnt work, by the way). The Joe Louis Arena (1979), The Detroit People Mover (can you say joke?) (1987), the THREE casinos (late 1990s) (how are those working out to help the MAJORITY OF DETROITERS??), Ford Field (2000), Comerica Park (2000) and the list goes on. Many of the REAL Detroiters I talk with every day have never even BEEN to most of these places. Now we can add the new Ilitch Arena and M-1 Rail. Some things never change. And by never change I mean grandiose visions of the rich being realized on the backs of the poor AND the ridiculous living conditions of the vast majority of resident of the city of Detroit. deadspin/detroit-scam-city-how-the-red-wings-took-hockeytown-fo-1534228789/1608278028/+bradleybill
