Year End Salute: The Veterans Wellness & Music Program Year End Salute: The Veterans Music & Wellness Program at Hochstein Saturday, November 9, 2013 4:00pm The public is invited to a culminating presentation at 4:00pm on November 9, 2013 for the Veterans Music Therapy program led by the Hochstein School of Music & Dance at the Canandaigua VA Hospital. This collaborative concert features veteran and percussionist Ed Keegan facilitating an interactive rhythm event, and presentations by the participants from the Canandaigua VA Music & Wellness Program. The concert will be located in the Hochstein Performance Hall at 50 N. Plymouth Avenue in downtown Rochester. It is free to military veterans; donations from the public will be accepted. Over the last year, the successful partnership included 40 veterans that benefited from individual and group music therapy sessions that were administered by Hochstein Music Therapist Joseph Kostecki NMT, MT-BC, with assistance from Nazareth College music therapy interns. The program included open sessions to learn about the benefits of music therapy, an open studio to allow veterans a low-risk opportunity to play music in a casual atmosphere, and exercise/gait music therapy group sessions. The Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation provided funding for the program. Of all the programming, music therapy (gait/exercise group) has been the best. I have benefited by being more active and flexible. Most of all, it has changed my attitude. Joe has given me hope and encouraged me to take control of my health and not give up on life. I now walk better, and want to be active and enjoy life again. -Nicholas Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter will be in attendance as a special guest. The concert is supported in part by the ESL Charitable Foundation, the Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation, the Hochstein School, and the Canandaigua VA Medical Center. ### Today Hochstein offers its services to veterans through connections with Veterans Outreach Center, the Nazareth College Veterans Outreach Coordinator, Canandaigua VA Medical Center, and a 2-year partnership with CDS Monarch Warrior Salute™. Hochstein music therapist Joseph Kostecki, NMT, MT-BC, has many years of experience in working with our nation’s veteran population. Individual work includes instrument lessons, speech and language rehabilitation, developing concentration and attention skills, easing anxiety, and song writing to process the experience of being in the military and of re-entering the community. Group work builds a variety of cognitive skills such as memory and attention, executive functioning skills, interpersonal communication, and using music to improve mood.
