Year after year, day in and day out, I am the caretaker of the ponies. They know me better than I know myself as I know them, every quirk, every habit, there likes and dislikes. They know the sound of my footstep and my every move is recognized. So, when mamma Lori goes away, look out. The younger and stronger horses while they will act like kids with a substitute teacher, they do just fine. In fact, they generally gain weight and attitude. But the old folks, not so much. It is very traumatizing for them to have not only a stranger appear to tend to there needs, but to deal with the teenagers on top of it all. When I leave this farm, the vet needs to be on call cause sure as all get out, one or two or more of the oldies stop eating. In fact, they dont even come in to the barn. They stand there and look at the help like they dont know what is up. So, going away is a scary scary thing. So scary that I have decided I just cant go away for a while longer because my heart cant take it either. But, the day I get home and get to the barn, theres the old folk. They are as excited as can be, they are so happy to see me, they head butt me all over the place vying for belly scratches and my love. Then we need to start the grocery fill up and within hours its as though mom never left. So tell me, why would I even want to leave. This will all be over way too soon anyhow. There is no cure for old age. I sure did miss my old folks.
