Yeh Hai Mohabbatein follows the story of Raman Bhalla and Ishita Iyer who are connected by their common love for Ramans little daughter Ruhi. Ishita is a Tamilian whereas Raman is a Punjabi. Ishita, who is unable to bear children, shares a very close, motherly relationship with Ruhi, while filling the void of a child in her own. She has been rejected by many marriage alliances because she is barren. She is friendly, warm and caring while Raman is bitter and hard from the days of his divorce. During his daughters custody case, he marries Ishita so that he can get custody. Raman gets his daughter Ruhis custody. Raman also has an 11 year-old son Aditya, whose mind is poisoned against Raman by his ex-wife Shagun Arora who recently got engaged to Raman business rival and ex-boss, Ashok Khanna. Court has given Adityas custody to Shagun. Raman and Ishitas marriage is just a contract for the sake of Ruhi. But Raman and Ishita soon starts falling in love but they did not realize it. After many dramatic incidents Ishitas sister Mihikas and Ramans best friend Mihirs whom he consider as a younger brother marriage is fixed. But thats when Mihikas family asks Mihir about his family. He tells that he has a sister who left him for her happiness and a mother with whom he doesnt have any contact for years. he tells that Ramans family is his family. Mihir and Mihika decides to do court marriage with the blessings of the families but couldnt as his sister has filed objection for this. Ishita now wants to know about Mihirs family and thats when she goes to learn cooking Punjabi dishes in Poornimas cooking class. Poornima always asks about her family and especially Ruhi. She also befriends a girl named Sanjana but feels something fishy in her behavior as she runs away seeing Raman or any member of Bhalla family. She confronts Sanjana about this and she says that she is Mihirs sister and Raman broke their relationship and also tells that She had an affair with Raman in past and he himself broke it. Ishita becomes jealous and angry hearing this and soon realize that she has fallen in love with him. After a series of misunderstanding Mihir burst out with the truth that Shagun is his sister and Poornima is his mom and hates them as they have made Ramans life a hell. Raman and Ishita asks him to forgive and make her marry with Ashok as Shagun is doing all this cause her life is unsettled and is frustrated. Ishitas feelings gets stronger as she sees Ramans good acts but is reluctant to confess it. Even Raman feel some love for her. Whereas it is revealed that Ashok is not interested in Shagun now and wants to stop the wedding. Meanwhile an old friend of Ishita, Mani, calls her and she is very happy. She goes for dinner with him and starts hanging out with him making Raman very much jealous. Raman at the same time lost a contract with a big business man, Abhimanyu Raghav due to Ashok. It is soon revealed that Abhimanyu is none other than Mani which Raman and Ishita is unaware of. Raman searches for Mani in all possible ways. Abhimanyu notices Raman and Ishitas love for each other and also finds out that they havent confessed. He now wants to bring them closer, make them confess love and move forward in married life
