Yes, a definite turning point in our perception of what is appropriate in a "renovation" of a ruined site. Certainly a bit scary and intimidating to tackle such a project, but immensely satisfying to view its completion. The architects approach not only gives a nod to what was certainly a glorious past, but also reminds us that the recent history of a structure can seal its ultimate demise, if we are not careful and vigilant about understanding and preserving the relics of our civilization. The architects have addressed these concerns and have initiated a dialogue that serves as a positive harbinger for other restorations in the 21st century of other similarly ruined sites. In addition, I believe this project has brought the Landmark Trust, a stodgy and somewhat irrelevant organization firmly into the 21st century. Bravo! Truly seminal work.
