Yes, i LOVE to read books and i believe, until now, finished several hundreds. But, ive never come across or read something like One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. We never question the amazing story telling capacity of the Latinos(theyve produced world famous names), but this book is extraordinarily different. ive never come across an author who can flirt so effortlessly between reality and fantasy, and can transcend from one to another in such a breathtaking way, without a pause, and without inciting an iota of doubt (whether what is described is ever possible) in the readers mind. A most beautiful damsel can suddenly float away and disappear in the clear blue sky...WOW!!! However to go through his lines, the reader must be BRAVE and MATURED enough. Marquez has INTENTIONALLY ventured into most dangerous domains, trampling at ease the SOCIAL TABOOS. This author was indeed a MOST, MOST brave man, who portrayed how hapless individuals can get physically trapped in mires strongly prohibited by the rigid norms of human society. It is about the war between impulses and social inhibition. In hands of lesser mortals these tales might have become Pgrahic memoirs, but Marquez went all out until the final conclusion which is often tragic, and yet, you couldnt blame the characters. He was a MASTER in describing moments of anticipation before death. i had earlier mentioned about this in FB. This was most fascinating to me. ive seen directly in the eyes of death many a times in my life, and couldnt believe how perfect Marquez has been in describing the emotions just before death. His characters, Colonel Aureliano Buendia, Ursula and Amaranta et al will haunt me forever. YOU ARE NO MORE, GABRIEL. Wherever you are, this is my tribute to you for the amazing gift you left behind for the entire humankind....
