Yes, it would be great to preserve this landmark, however, with a price tag of $3 to 4 million just to bring it back up to code, which does not include any significant improvements and with many competing high dollar projects such as the police station and a new waste water treatment plant, I cant see where that would be a wise investment plan. Should the city have done a better job maintaining the building, absolutely, I think we need to do a better job maintaining all of our buildings(Perry hall?). I think the start of the decline was when the steam was cut-off to the building which was once supplied from the business across the street. That increased the cost to operate and took away from proper maintenance. IF a way is found to bring the building back(grants or private donation), it should be brought back as an enterprise account so that it is self sustaining and not a draw on the city budget. IF the city were to come up with a way of funding $3-4 million, I think the money would be better spent fixing our roads and infrastructure rather than on one building. I think improving our roads would go a lot further to attracting businesses and residents to Gardner More than an outdated swimming facility. especially when there remains an under utilized more modern pool available for use at the MWCC. JUST MY THOUGHT...
