Yesterday 1st Feb 2014 visited a number of primary, secondary & high schools of Taluka Kotdiji District Khairpur with Karam Hussain Wassan & media people. The aim of this visit was to see the situation of education. It is very disappointing & sad to see the crumbling condition of education. We managed to visit around 10 primary boys, one primary girls, two elementary & two high schools. Two out of ten boys primary schools, one out of two high schools & both elementry schools found properly functional. All other were closed or just opened before our arrival. We observed after visiting a working boys primary school, the news was spread to all teachers that a team is visiting schools, so some of them managed to open schools but many failed to do so. Traditionally teaching is considered a respected profession & it is respected job because this was the profession of our Prophet SAW (PBUH). Unfortunately lying was so common in many teachers. During this visit I learned an interesting terminology of devastated education system of Sindh such as visa teacher - this means a teacher gives a portion of his/her salary to govt officials & dont do his/her job. A taxi-teacher - this denotes a teacher hires a person to attend school on his/her behalf. Lakar or bund tar - this means if a team or an official visits any one school in a UC or beat or near by area this information is communicated with other fellow teachers quickly to make them cautious. I have been listening the stories of non-functional/semi-functional primary schools but it was shocking to see a high was almost non-functional. When we spoke an official of high schools he also acknowledged the position of this school but he didnt take any action. I salute to those teachers who are doing their jobs in this hard situation, in which their fellows are in majority who dont want to do their job. I dont just blame teachers for this devastated situation of education, there are multiple factors & actors involved in this mess such as community/parents, leaders/politicians, government/state, civil society, private school owners/establishment above all we all as a Sindhi nation. Lets unite at least on this issue of our survival - Save Education Save Sindh. I have photos will upload later.
