Yesterday David Kerr, when asked for a cast-iron guarantee that the mill would be fixed with no delays said this, Yes, you have my guarantee that the mill will not ask for any delays or extensions. By the directive date, the mill will be in compliance with all emission standards, even the more stricter ones expected with the renewal of the operating permit, or the mill will not be started up - period. David also went on to discuss ways of cleaning up boat harbour and although he couldnt say with any certainty who would be ultimately responsible for the cost he definitely had some positive input into the methodology. I found this to be almost glasnostic (I know glasnostic is not a word yet but I’m sure if I use it often enough that it will be one day) approach quite refreshing and if we are truly a “clean up the mill” group as opposed to a “close down the mill” group I think we have to take him at his word. I know that many of you are most likely somewhat skeptical, as indeed am I, but if you ask a representative of a company a direct question and you receive an unequivocal answer you can’t very well argue with the answer and say that you don’t believe it. If that were the case you have no right asking the question in the first place! In business and in my personal life I have always learned never to fight a losing battle (this was also the advice of Sun Tzu) I think that we all know that fighting to get anything further done before the deadline is perhaps a waste of our time. We would be better employed in preparing ourselves in case the government does a U-turn and perhaps allow timescales to slip. In the meantime is it not time to try and “bury the hatchet” and try and work with NP towards a common end? This whole affair has been dogged by politicians of all parties and now it would appear that Stephen McNeil has all but admitted that he is not keen on helping anyone in Pictou County because we are as a county PC rather than Liberal. We will only make progress on this or any matter if our political masters can see the need for political expedience. In conclusion I think that we should look to the political arena to concentrate our efforts whilst at the same time trying to work with NP towards a satisfactory outcome.
