Yesterday I did a coaching session with a 50 year old woman who had been applying for jobs and coming in at number 2. It was an excellent discussion and we made a lot of ground - covering things like How do you approach a 2 page written response when there is NO selection criteria? What opportunity does this open approach provide to you and the employer? How valuable are you now that you are 50?!... ie What can you do now that you couldnt do (perhaps physically, cognitively, emotionally) when you were 40? Whos interviewing who?, Is it an interview or just a conversation that helps both parties understand if they are a match?, How much do you ask and control the direction of the conversation, What are the best questions to ask at the end of the interview?, And so on and on it went... It was a very comfortable, easy conversation. The position/work under discussion was an Executive Assistant role. A fabulous discovery at the beginning of our conversation was that we both attended St Patricks Business College in the same year - 1981 - and we have NO recollection of ever laying eyes on each other at that time! Im very grateful for the opportunity to help others take their next step... and I feel confident this fabulous woman will be moving into a new exciting role in the not so distant future.
