Yesterday I had the misfortune of experiencing the hardships that Kenyans face at public hospitald on a daily basis. At the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a young man collapsed and died afew metres away from the hospital after being treated and released there. While the facts of the case are being investigated, its is likely a case of misdiagnosis. The negligence when the hospital was informed of the patient outside its gates and refusal to send an ambulance to his rescue was the ultimate cause of the loss of that young life. Inside the hospital we met with horror. Hundreds of patients unattended to, emergency victims lying bleeding at the reception for hours including a 3 year old boy who had been bleeding for 6 hours from head injuries, pregnant mothers being asked to walk around the estate until they are ready to deliver. This might sound alarmist but unfortunately is the truth. Obviously as we celebrate 50 years of independence, we are yet to make significant investments in the healthcare system that should not only be accessible and affordable, but efficient in service delivery. The reports of lost lives at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital should shake the Nairobi County Government and Ministry of Health into action. If this hospital doesnt have enough resources or the right personel, then it should be shut down until such a time that it can service wananchi well.
