Yesterday, I had the opportunity to tour three different outstanding private for-profit day camp locations/facilities in New York. It was neat to see all the different programs and activities each camp had for kids to learn and do. The tours mainly focused on the capital purchases (pools/water features, sport fields/courts, rope courses, art studios, etc). That being said, there were a few things that made me realize why Scout camps are unique and special. Scout camps teach environmental stewardship, appreciation of nature and outdoor skills exceptionally well. Next, Scout camps have a strong emphasis on character and citizenship development as well as leadership. Again, my opinion, but I think Scouting does it better than anyone else. Also, I feel that Scout camps provide outdoor adventure throughout the country in a in a manner that is affordable to most families. And those that need some financial help, we pitch in as Troops/Packs, chartering organizations, council camperships, etc to make sure finances do not prohibit participation. Just another reason I feel Scouting is a fantastic program for every family... Special thanks to Mary Warders Beltz and Steve for letting me crash at your beautiful home on Monday night! It was fantastic catching up!
