Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending an assembly at East Fallowfield Elementary School where representatives from Citadel came to present 4th grade teacher, Mr. John Wagner as a finalist for the Heart of Learning Award. The gym was infused with music from the 4th and 5th grade band jamming We Will Rock You as Mr. Wagner entered to a balloon drop. Unaware the assembly was a tribute to him in recognition for his dedication to his students, his school, his district, and his community, he was surprised and shocked when greeted by his wife, his parents, and his class on stage. Also in attendance were his fellow amazing teachers, all the incredibly excited East Fallowfield students, district administrators, former students as well as current and former parents all there to support and honor an exceptional Coatesville teacher. The celebration began with a poem read by his class who were wearing glasses and dressed in shirts and ties, just as Mr. Wagner wears every day. A speech followed by the principal, Mr. Wallace while the Coatesville Area High School Jazz Ensemble played. A touching video was presented filled with childhood memories, photos of Mr. Wagner with his students and quotes written by current and former students along with parents. The Citadel representatives presented the award after reading excerpts from the letters nominating him. The assembly concluded with a tearful speech by Mr. Wagner thanking everyone for their continued support. Mr. Wagner is a Coatesville graduate who came back to teach in the district he loves. Good luck Mr. Wagner, we are proud of you! #coatesvillepride
