Yesterday, I heard about the death of Lucien Clergue while walking through one of the two amazing Picasso exhibits in Chelsea right now. I have always been a Picasso groupie, infatuated by the mystique of the great artist. Thinking about Clergue and looking at the crowds of admiring Picasso fans made me realize how much of how we feel about the image of the superstar artist has to do with how the great photographer chose to portray him. Clergues complicity, generosity, admiration and sense of style was a great contribution to the Picasso myth. He knew what a great artist should look like and you need to be an equally great artist to know that.
