Yesterday I lunched at Chop Chop the new noodle place in Ponsonby - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I lunched at Chop Chop the new noodle place in Ponsonby Central, Auckland and as I was slurping my Twelve Hour Organic Beef Brisket noodle it occurred to me that if I reviewed the places I dine it would encourage me to explore further and eat more adventurously. So here goes: Chop Chop is the latest thing from Mark Wallbank and Che Barrington (the duo behind two of my faves Moochowchow and Blue Breeze Inn). Its set up reminds me of the noodle bar at David Jones in Sydney with stools at a counter that surrounds the kitchen but the food was way, way better. My rye noodles came in a silky, beefy broth with lumps of chewy brisket, shiitake mushrooms and bacon. The chilli hit was subtle but you can add more with oil or chopped fresh chilli which is offered free along with other condiments like Japanese mayo and ginger. We ordered a side of kimchi purely because Ive never eaten this Korean fermented vegetable dish. Its fair to say I wont be bothering with it again. However I will be returning to Chop Chop for the soft shell crab, the pork bun and more noodles from the small but perfectly formed menu. The cocktails look pretty good too. Prices are slightly higher than youd pay in your local food court - the beef noodles were $18 - but its well worth it. For more info go to ponsonbychopchop.co.nz
